I’m one of those people who wouldn’t really explore the local neighbourhood until I’m about to leave. And as always, I discover something awesome and don’t want to move anymore. This is the case with Weißensee (it literally means ‘white lake’ in German). It’s a super nice lake and I’m a bit disappointed at myself that I didn’t take advantage of it as often as I should have.
I’ve never been a lake-person until I heard that you can actually swim in this one. Melbourne doesn’t have much of a lake-culture. Sure, there’s the Albert Park lake, but you can’t swim in that one. Then there are the lakes that are in the whoop-whoop suburbs where if you can be bothered driving out there, then you can possibly swim following strict guidelines about what not to do.
What makes Weißensee and other lakes in Berlin great, is this vibrancy built around it. You can run around the lake, sit in the cafe by the lake, or take a dip in the lake with or without clothes. Heck, you can even go feed the deers. Yes, there are deers at Weißensee!
There’s also a chilled club house by the lake where you can pay a small fee to sit on the man-made sand, listen to live music, and watch whatever is played on the big screen (from sports to films). If you want to save a few bucks, you can simply duck to the other side of the club house to swim, or wait until after 7 p.m. when there’s free entrance.
